Another Proposition in California

So there is the horrible Proposition 8 in California to take away gay and lesbian's right to marry and another one called Proposition 2 to ban inhumane farming. I think this video from the Humane Society of California is one example of why I'm a vegetarian and why I am considering cutting fish, eggs and more dairy out of my diet.

Did you ever stop and think that these cattle might ENJOY being pushed around by a forklift or being kicked in the face? I bet they didn't even consider the masochistic farm animal when they drafted this proposition!

I like these kinds of bills and laws but I do have a hard time voting for anything where interpretable ideas like "inhumane" are used. It's good for the animals and it's good for everyone involved to have a law like this, but you can almost assure that someone will use this to drive a hard-working man, who's farming practices may be seen as "inhumane", out of business.

I'd be willing to bet that some people in the world think that if the animals don't get their own pasture and and golden feed trough then they are being treated "inhumanely". It's a tough issue.

Unfortunately, I totally agree with you. Inhumane is vague and I'm not totally sure how this proposition is phrased. I think factory farming animals in cages they can't move in is horrendous, but I'm also dissociated from the increase in cost that would arise if this practice was stopped. For instance, using pigs that aren't genetically modified (and thus are generally smaller and less fertile) and can be outside will increase the ridiculously low cost of meat. I don't personally care how much meat costs (sorry!) but it's totally just me being self-interested in that respect...
